Caldwell County is the "Gateway to the Blue Ridge," and that name is the whole story for site work here. The county climbs from the Catawba River valley at around 1,000 feet in the southeast up into the Blue Ridge — Grandfather Mountain, on the far northwest corner, tops out near 5,950 feet — so the ground runs from gently rolling upper Piedmont to steep, rocky mountain slopes. Down in the Piedmont and foothills where most work happens, the soil is red clay (the Cecil and Pacolet series) over saprolite — "rotten rock" — that drains slowly and slicks up when it's wet. Climb toward the escarpment and the soils get stonier and shallower to rock.

The Catawba River runs along Caldwell's southern edge as two Duke Energy reservoirs — Lake Rhodhiss (full pond about 995 feet) and, downstream, Lake Hickory — with Granite Falls sitting between them and Sawmills on the Rhodhiss shore. Inland, Lower Creek drains Lenoir and Gamewell toward Rhodhiss, Gunpowder Creek runs through Granite Falls to Lake Hickory, and the Johns River and the Wild & Scenic Wilson Creek drain the mountain northwest. FEMA maps flood-hazard zones along the lakeshores and those creeks, and lake-margin lots also answer to Duke's shoreline rules. Anywhere near the water we check the flood maps and tell you what they say before we price the grading.
US-321 is the four-lane spine of the county, running north–south from Hickory up through Granite Falls and Hudson to Lenoir and on toward Blowing Rock. NC-18 carries toward Morganton and Wilkesboro, NC-90 and NC-268 branch off near Lenoir, and I-40 runs just south of the county, reached in a few minutes via US-321. Because we're based in Granite Falls, most of Caldwell is a short haul — but we still plan equipment access before the trailer rolls, since a tight lakeside lot or a steep foothill drive doesn't have the room a four-lane does.
