Valdese was settled May 29, 1893; incorporated February 17, 1920, named for the Waldensians — "Valdese" is Italian for Waldensian. Twenty-nine Waldensian settlers from the Cottian Alps of northern Italy stepped off Southern Railway's No. 11 train on May 29, 1893, at a prearranged spot in the middle of nowhere. The first person off was a ten-year-old boy, Louis Phillippe Guigou. By November another 178 had followed. The Valdese Corporation bought 10,000 acres for $25,000 on credit. The soil was poor and farming was hard, so the colony turned to industry.
Landmarks and historic sites around town include the Waldensian Presbyterian Church of 1896, the Waldensian Heritage Museum, the Trail of Faith, the Old Rock School, and McGalliard Falls Park. Valdese is the largest waldensian colony in the world outside italy, and since 1967 the old colony players have staged the outdoor drama "from this day forward" every summer.
